Strategies for Long-Term Weight Loss and Maintenance
Seo Yoo-Bin
Abstract
Obesity is a substantial global health issue and a crucial risk factor for various health conditions. Even after successful weight loss, factors such as neurohormonal changes, homeostatic mechanisms, and obesogenic environments contribute to weight regain and the exacerbation of metabolic disorders. Therefore, it is essential to educate patients regarding the importance of weight maintenance from the early stages of treatment and aim for long-term maintenance. As for dietary interventions, if intake level induces energy deficit for sustained weight loss/maintenance and is nutritionally appropriate, various macronutrient compositions and meal patterns can be selected based on individual medical conditions and preferences. For weight maintenance, it is recommended to engage in moderate- to high-intensity physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week, encouraging patients to set achievable goals based on their level and maintain them. Continuing the use of long-term approved medications even after weight loss can help with weight maintenance. Applying personalized strategies and cognitive-behavioral therapy can increase longterm adherence to the treatment plan.
